- 5/32 Perimeter Slider
The 5/32 Flat slider is a fantastic option if you have a little experience curling and you want to take your delivery to that next level with some speed coming out of the hack..
Perimeter Slider -
We ask you to test the science. Draw a line across the sole of your slider shoe at the ball of your foot with a marker. Take a number of slides and you will see the marker wearing off in the center of the shoe. Your weight is focussed in a narrow band in the center of your foot. By removing the slider from this middle area, your weight is distributed to the periphery. The platform on which you are sliding is now much wider.
The Perimeter Slider enhances stability in two ways: by affording a broader platform on which to balance; by using a thick and hence fast slider material, less leg drive is required. The Perimeter Slider is available in two thicknesses: 5/32" and 1/4". Perimeter sliders are optional on Regal, Summit and Allegro shoes and may be retrofitted on other shoes.
What does the thickness have to do with speed?
Curling ice is pebbled and a thin slider, being less rigid, encounters more drag as it goes over the pebble. A thicker slider is more rigid and tends to ride on the tip of the pebble, encountering less drag. Therefore the thicker the slider the more "slippery" it is on the ice, requiring less leg drive. Our only caution is if you have concern about your balance on the ice it might be best to start with a thinner slider.
