Getting to Know: Goldline Ambassador Niklas Edin

Niklas Edin has achieved phenomenal success on the curling ice in his first 28 years.  Among his achievements:  2004 World Junior Champion;  2005 silver medalist and 2008 bronze medalist at the European Mixed Championships; gold medalist at the 2009 Winter Universiade;  2009 and 2012 European Curling champion; and 2011 bronze medalist at the men’s World Curling Championships.  And this past season, he swept away the competition in winning a gold medal and the title of men’s World Curling Champion!

Niklas and team mates Sebastien Kraupp, Fredrik Lindberg, and Victor Kjall are now getting ready to aim for another first: Olympic gold for Sweden at the Sochi games.

The team is getting in some practice in Canada this fall.  In addition to the AMJ Campbell Shorty Jenkins Classic and the Point Optical Curling Classic, the team is also scheduled to play in the Canada Inns Prairie Classic and the Grand Slam of Curling.

Earlier this month, Edin spoke to CNN in its “Human to Hero” series; click here to see what Niklas had to say.

Edin and his team mates recently dropped by our Goldline store in Mississauga where I had a chance to chat briefly with Niklas.

Q: With this being an Olympic year, how is your preparation going into this season different from other seasons?

A: We have adjusted our schedule this season.  We have cut down on the amount of travel and the number of events in which we’ll play.  Our focus is really on quality versus quantity.  We’ll spend more time in Sweden and really try to focus on practice.

A: Physical fitness has become such an important part of the game.  What kind of fitness regime does your team follow?

Q:  Fitness is a key part of the game.  Cardio is really important: we pretty much do a cardio workout every day.  On top of that, we also fit in 4 to 5 gym sessions per week.  We do lots of jumping exercises which helps in driving out of the hack and we also do lots of off-ice sweeping training.  Over the course of a week, we probably spend 50% of our training time on the ice and 50% off the ice.

Q: When you’re not curling, how does the team relax?

A: I really enjoy watching movies.   We all really love music.  We do hang out together a lot but we all make sure to also spend time with family and friends.

Goldline is very proud to welcome team Edin to its roster of Ambassadors.  We wish them the best of luck this season!
