Introducing Goldline Ambassador Bronwen Webster

Vice – Third – Vice skip.

No matter what the title, this individual is one of the most critical elements of any curling team. This person has many roles to play. The vice must be able to throw the full gamut of shots. Assuming the front end has set things up perfectly, the vice may be throwing up guards, but in the event things have not gone so well, the vice will be playing clean up in preparation for the skip’s stones. Draws, hits, raises: this individual has to be able to throw them all.

A vice must not only be a shot maker: he/she is also sweeping stones and then calling the line when the skip throws his/her rocks. When it comes to strategic calls, the vice often is the one to whom the skip turns for input. And let’s not forget that the vice is tossing the coin at the start of the game, and then posting the score for your team throughout the course of play.

The vice: the glue that binds, the jack of all trades on the squad.
